In 1962, Dr. Oakleigh Thorne III, studying to complete his Masters at the University of Colorado at Boulder, brought the Yale Whiffenpoofs, one of the country's oldest and most prestigious a cappella groups, to campus for a performance. Having been the Whiffenpoofs music director previously, when approached by two undergraduate students, Don Grusin and Roger Nelson, about starting a new a cappella group with other students at the university, Oak immediately took them under his wing and founded the oldest a cappella group at CU, the Buffoons. Over the years, the group has released countless albums and toured all over the state, performing for private clientele and in public spaces alike. To celebrate 60 years of existence, and to honor the many generations of Buffoons that had come before them, the current group set out to create an album like no other, mixing past, present, and a little future to produce Carved From Oak, a 32 minute modern a cappella experience with the classic Buffoon flavor the group has become known for. Boasting impressive arrangements of songs from the 20th and 21st century, and spanning a wide variety of genres, this new project was created with one goal in mind; take inspiration from the past while building a new legacy that future Buffoons could use as a metaphorical measuring stick for success in the recording sphere. With production helmed by industry titans Corey Slutsky, of Voices Only Productions, and Bill Hare, multiple time Grammy award winner and the man responsible for the modern a cappella sound as we know it, and phenomenal solo performances backed by lush, powerful vocal harmonies and punchy, driving vocal percussion, this 10 track offering is sure to be a new favorite of a cappella fans young and old.
